David Chang, md
David F. Chang, M.D. is widely recognized as one of the top cataract surgeons in the world. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard College and earned his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was promoted to Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology in 1999. He has taught cataract surgery to ophthalmology residents in training for more than 25 years. Dr. Chang is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, one of the leading ophthalmology academic centers in Asia.
As one of the most prominent international experts, Dr. Chang regularly lectures on cataract techniques and the newest lens implants to other surgeons in the U.S. and abroad, and has received numerous prestigious national and international awards. In 2009, he received what is considered to be the highest international honor for a cataract surgeon – the Binkhorst Medal from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Chang is serving as the president of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in 2012, which is the largest international organization for cataract and refractive surgeons, numbering over 9000 members. Since 2005 Dr. Chang has served on a select national panel that issues practice guidelines for cataract surgery that are used worldwide (American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Pattern Committee), and assumed the role of chairman in 2009. He was previously chairman for another national advisory panel for the Board Certification Examination in cataract surgery (American Academy of Ophthalmology Practicing Ophthalmologist Curriculum Committee). From 2004-2009 he served a 5-year term as chairman of the Program Committee for the largest and most prestigious ophthalmology meeting in the world, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Annual Meeting.
Dr. Chang has written numerous papers and chapters on cataract surgery, and is the author or editor of four best-selling textbooks on advanced cataract surgical techniques and artificial lens implants. His textbook Mastering Refractive IOLs covers the new lens implants, such as multifocal, accommodating, and toric lenses, and is considered the most comprehensive and authoritative textbook on the subject. He is on the editorial board of numerous ophthalmology journals and served for 5 years as Chief Medical Editor for Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today, one of the most widely read specialty trade journals for cataract surgeons.
Dr. Chang serves on the medical advisory board of two global humanitarian organizations, Himalayan Cataract Project and Project Vision, and is also on the Board of Directors for the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology. Within Project Vision, he co-founded a program to teaching modern cataract techniques to eye surgeons in charity eye hospitals in China and elsewhere in Asia.
